[Introduction]
Sequela of apoplexy refers to paralysis of limbs, distortion of face and difficulty in speaking after the attack of acute cerebrovascular disease, similar to wind stroke and paralysis in TCM. It is caused by non-restoration of the visceral functions, retention of phlegm and blood stasis in the meridians as well as abnormal flow of meridian
[Syndrome differentiation]
Paralysis of limbs on one side, accompanied by numbness or pain or susceptibility to sweating, distortion of face, stiffness of tongue and difficulty in speaking and swallowing.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Baihui (GV 20), Hegu (LI 4) and Tai-chong (LR 3).
Modification: For paralysis of upper limbs, Jianyu (LI 15), Quchi (LI 11), Shousanli (LI 10) and Waiguan (TE 15) are added for paralysis of lower limbs, Huantiao (GB 30 ), Zusanli (ST 36 ), Yanglingquan ( GB 34 ), Fenglong (ST 40), Xuanzhong (GB 39) and Kunlun (BL 60) are added; for distortion of face, Jiache (ST 6), Di-cang (ST 4), Yangbai (GB 14), Cuanzhu (BL 2) are add-ed; for stiffness of tongue, Lianquan (CV 23) and Tongli (HT 5) are added; for difficulty in swallowing, Lianquan (CV 23) and Fengchi (GB 20) are added.
Performance: The acupoints are selected and needled according to the pathological conditions. Usually mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques are used. The acupoints on the four limbs are needled with the addition of moxibustion. Jiache (ST 6) and Dicang (ST 4) are needled with the needles pointing to each other. Lianquan (CV 23) is needled with the needle pointing to the root of the tongue. Fengchi (GB 20) is needled with rotating and twirling manipulations.
2. Scalp acupuncture
Prescription: Motor zone, sensory zone, zone of pedal movement and sensation and lingual zone on the opposite side.
Performance: The needles are inserted 0.5 - 1 cun with intermittent manipulation. The needles are retained for 30 minutes. Impulse current can be attached to the needles with moderate and strong stimulation for 30 minutes.

TCM-Acupuncture for Angioneurotic Headache
[Introduction]
Angioneurotic headache is usually believed to be caused by disturbance of cerebral vessels and nerves and to be related to various active agents in blood. Clinically angioneurotic headache is unilateral and recurrent, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and premonitory signs. It is usually of family history and frequently seen among women. It is similar to headache and migraine in TCM. The causes are either attack by exogenous pathogenic wind or dysfunction of the liver, spleen and kidney that lead to retention of pathogenic factors in the meridians, or hyperactivity of liver yang, or obstruction by phlegm and stagnation, or failure of qi and blood to nourish the head.
[Syndrome differentiaton]
1. Wind attacking meridians
Frequent severe headache, onset with the attack of cold and wind, pain involving the neck and back, thin and white tongue fur, taut and tense pulse.
2. Hyperactivity of liver yang
Headache, dizziness, occurrence with mental upsets or nervousness, dysphoria and susceptibility to rage, insomnia, flushed cheeks and bitter taste in the mouth, red tongue with yellow fur and taut pulse.
3. Asthenia of both qi and blood
Continuous headache, dizziness, relapse with over-strain, spiritual lassitude and fatigue, pale complexion, light-colored tongue, thin and weak pulse.
4. Interior obstruction of phlegm and turbid sub-stance
Headache, chest oppression, nausea, vomiting of phlegm and drool, white and greasy tongue fur, slippery pulse.
5. Qi stagnation and blood stasis
Prolonged duration, fixed location of pain, prickly pain, or history of traumatic injury of the head, purplish tongue or with ecchymoses, thin and unsmooth pulse.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Baihui (GV 20) and Taiyang (EX-HN 5).
Modification: For wind attacking meridians, acupoints should be selected according to the location of headache. Yintang (EX-HN 3), Shangxing (GV 23) and Hegu (LI 4) are added for pain in the forehead; Touwei (ST 8), Fengchi (GB 20), Waiguan (TE 15) and Xiaxi (GB 43) are added for pain in the side of the head; Fengchi (6B 20) and Kunlun (BL 60) are added for pain in the back of the head; Fengchi (GB 20) and Taichong (LR 3) are added for pain in the vertex of the head; for hyperactivity of liver yang, Fengchi (GB 20) and Xingjian (LR 2) are added; for asthenia of both qi and blood, Qihai (CV 6), Zusanli (ST 36), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) are added; for interior obstruction of phlegm and turbid substance, Fenglong (ST 40) and Neiguan (PC 6) are added; for qi stagnation and blood stasis, Fengchi (GB 20), Hegu (LI 4), Taichong (LR 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Geshu (BL 17) are added.
Performance: Each time 4 - 6 acupoints are selected according to the pathological conditions. For the treatment of asthenia of both qi and blood, reinforcing needling technique and moxibustion are used. The rest syndromes are needled with reducing or mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques. For the treatment of blood stasis, Taiyang (EX- HN 5) is pricked for bloodletting.
2. Ear acupuncture
Prescription: Subcortical (AT4), Occipital (AT3), Forehead (AT1), Temple (AT2), Liver (CO12) and Gall-bladder (CO11).
Performance: Each time 3 - 4 acupeints are selected and the needles are retained for 30 minutes. Or Wangbu liuxingzi (Semen Vaccariae) is used for ear pressure.

Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Intercostal Neuralgia
[Introduction]
Intercostal neuralgia is marked by puncturing or lightning pain in the region with the distribution of intercostal nerves. It may be worsened by laughing, sneezing or deep breath. In severe cases, pain may radiate to the shoulder and back. Intercostal neuralgia is usually secondary, primary case is rare. This syndrome pertains to pain in rib-side in TCM. It is usually caused by stagnation of liver qi, damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, obstruction of blood stasis and insufficiency of blood in the liver and kidney that lead to obstruction or malnutrition of the liver and gallbladder meridians.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Liver depression and qi stagnation
Distending pain in the rib-side and hypochondria, oppression and discomfort in the chest, anorexia, bitter taste in the mouth, aggravation with depression and rage, thin and white or yellow tongue fur, taut pulse.
2. Obstruction of collaterals by blood stasis
Fixed stabbing pain in the rib-side, or caused by sprain, contusion and falling with purplish tongue and un-smooth pulse.
3. Insufficiency of blood
Vague hypochondriac pain, dry mouth and dysphoria, dizziness, red tongue with scanty fur, thin and rapid pulse.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Zhigou (TE 6) and Yanglingquan (GB 34).
Modification: For liver depression and qi stagnation, Qimen (LR 14) and Taichong (LR 3) are added; for ob-struction of the collaterals by blood stasis, Geshu (BL 17), Ganshu (BL 18) and Taichong (LR 3) are added; for insufficiency of blood, Ganshu (BL 18), Shenshu (BL 23), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Zusanli (ST 36) and Xingjian (LR 2) are added.

Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Sciatica
Sciatica is marked by pain radiating to the foot from lumbar region, buttocks, posterior side of the thigh and lateral side of the shank. The pain is usually unilateral and will be aggravated when the waist is bent or the lower limbs are moved. The causes of sciatica are various. Clinically it is divided into primary and secondary types. The secondary type is further classified into root and trunk types. Sciatica pertains to the conceptions of obstructive syndrome, lumbago and pain of loins and legs in TCM. It is mainly caused by exogenous pathogenic wind, cold and dampness that obstruct meridians; or by asthenia of kidney qi and malnutrition of meridians; or by trauma, sprain, contusion and stagnation of qi and blood in meridians.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Obstruction by cold-dampness
Frequent attack after invasion of cold-dampness, pain and heaviness of loins and legs, inflexibility, subjective cold sensation in the affected region, aggravation in rainy and cold weather, white or white and greasy tongue fur, deep pulse.
2. Asthenia of kidney qi
Slow onset, lingering duration, recurrence, aching pain in the loins, aggravation after work, weakness of waist and legs, pale complexion, light-colored tongue, deep and thin pulse.
3. Stagnation of qi and blood
Traumatic injury history of waist, stabbing pain in the waist and legs, aggravation in movement, purplish tongue, taut or unsmooth pulse.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: 3 - 5 lumbar Jiaji (EX-B2), Ashi point, Huantiao (GB 30) and Yanglingquan (GB 34).
Modification: For obstruction by cold-dampness, Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Dachangshu (BL 25), Zhibian (BL 54), Chengfu (BL 36), Chengshan (BL 57), Feiyang (BL 58) and Kunlun (BL 60) are added; for asthenia of kidney qi, Shenshu (BL 23), Zusanli (ST 36) and Dazhong (KI 4) are added; for stagnation of qi and blood, Shuigou (GV 26), Weizhong (BL 40) and Geshu (BL 17) are added.
Performance: Each time 4 - 9 acupoints are selected according to the pathological conditions. For the treatment of cold-dampness, reducing needling technique, warmed needling or moxibustion with moxa roll are used with the addition of cupping; for the treatment of kidney asthenia, reinforcing needling technique, warmed needling or moxibustion with moxa cone are used; for the treatment of stagnation, bloodletting is done on Weizhong (BL 40) or on the collaterals around.
2. Electro-acupuncture
Prescription: Lumbar Jiaji (EX-B2), Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Weizhong (BL 40).
Performance: After needling sensation is felt, impulse current is attached to the needles for 10 - 15 minutes, once a day.

Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Peripheral Facial Paralysis
[Introduction]
Peripheral facial paralysis is due to acute and non-suppurating inflammation in stylomastoid foramen, marked by sudden onset in the morning with the manifestations of stiffness, numbness and looseness of the face, enlargement of palpebral fissure, deviation of the mouth to the healthy side, disappearance of wrinkles on the forehead, flattening of the nasolabial groove and inability to draw eyebrows, frown, close eyes, show teeth, bulge cheeks and pout lips. In some patients pain appears behind the ear and in the face in the early stage. It is similar to distortion of face in TCM. It is mainly caused by wind attacking the meridians in the face, leading to obstruction of meridian qi, malnutrition of tendons and flaccidity of muscles.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Wind attacking superficies
Sudden distortion of face, numbness of face, or pain behind the ear, aversion to cold and fever, thin and white tongue fur, floating and tense or floating and rapid pulse.
2. Insufficiency of qi and blood as well as obstruction of pathogenic factors in the vessels and meridians
Prolonged duration of illness, distortion of face, stiffness of face, even spasm of face, or difficulty in opening eyes, light-colored tongue and thin pulse.
[Treatment]

Modification: For pain behind ear: Yifeng (TE 17) is added; for inability to close eyes, Yangbai (GB 14) and Cuanzhu (BL 2) are added; for flattening of nasolabial groove, Yingxiang (LI 20) is added; for deviation of nasolabial groove, Shuigou (GV 26) is added; for deviation of mentolabial groove, Chengjiang (CV 24) is added; for prolonged duration of illness, Zusanli (ST 36) is added.
Performance: Jiache (ST 6) and Dicang (ST 4) are needled horizontally toward each other; Yangbai (GB 14) is needled horizontally downward. The acupoints on the face are needled with mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques; Fengchi (GB 20) is needled with rotating and twirling techniques; Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong ( LR 3) are needled with reducing techniques; Zusanli (ST 36) is needled with reinforcing technique with the addition of moxibustion. Peripheral facial paralysis is due to acute and non-suppurating inflammation in stylomastoid foramen, marked by sudden onset in the morning with the manifestations of stiffness, numbness and looseness of the face, enlargement of palpebral fissure, deviation of the mouth to the healthy side, disappearance of wrinkles on the forehead, flattening of the nasolabial groove and inability to draw eyebrows, frown, close eyes, show teeth, bulge cheeks and pout lips. In some patients pain appears behind the ear and in the face in the early stage. It is similar to distortion of face in TCM. It is mainly caused by wind attacking the meridians in the face, leading to obstruction of meridian qi, malnutrition of tendons and flaccidity of muscles.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Wind attacking superficies
Sudden distortion of face, numbness of face, or pain behind the ear, aversion to cold and fever, thin and white tongue fur, floating and tense or floating and rapid pulse.
2. Insufficiency of qi and blood as well as obstruction of pathogenic factors in the vessels and meridians
Prolonged duration of illness, distortion of face, stiffness of face, even spasm of face, or difficulty in opening eyes, light-colored tongue and thin pulse.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Fengchi (GB 20), Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3).

Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Prosopalgia
[Introduction]
Prosopalgia refers to recurrent, short, paroxysmal, lightning-like, stabbing or burning pain in the trigeminal region. Clinically the second and third branches of trigeminal nerve on one side are often involved. Prosopalgia often occurs among people over 40, especially women. It is either primary or secondary. Clinically primary prosopalgia is usually encountered. The following discussion mainly focuses on primary prosopalgia. This disease perrains to the conception of "facial pain" in TCM. It is usually caused by wind attacking the meridians, or upward adverse flow of liver and stomach fire, or consumption of qi and blood as well as stagnation of the vessels and meridians.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Hegu (LI 4); Taiyang (EX-HN 5), Cuanzhu (BL 2) and Yangbai (GB 14) for pain of the first branch; Sibai (ST 2), Yingxiang (LI 20) and 0uanliao (SI 18) for pain of the second branch; Xiaguan (ST 7), Da-ying (ST 5) and Jiachengjiang (Ext.) for pain of the third branch.
Modification: For wind attacking the meridians, Waiguan (TE 15) and Fengchi (GB 20) are added; for upward adverse flow of liver and stomach fire, Taichong (LR 3) and Neiting (ST 44) are added; for consumption of qi and blood as well as stagnation in the vessels and meridians, Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Zusanli (ST 36) and Geshu (BL 17) are added.
Performance: Local selection of acupoints is made according to the pathological conditions. Twirling and rotating or mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques are used. Hegu (LI 4) is needled with reducing needling technique; Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Zusanli (ST 36) are needled with reinforcing needling technique with the addition of moxibustion; Geshu (BL 17) is needled with mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques. The manipulative techniques for the local acupoints should be mild, while the manipulative techniques for the distal acupoints should be drastic. The needles are retained for 30 minutes or for 1 hour for severe cases and manipulated several times at intervals according to the pathological conditions. The needling is done once a day or once every other day for patients with chronic disease or weak constitution.
2. Ear acupuncture
Prescription: Forehead (AT1), Mandible (L03), Ear Shenmen (TF4), Cheeks (LOs, 6i) and Sympathetic (AH6a).
Performance: Each time 2 - 3 acupoints are selected and needled with strong stimulation. The needles are retained for 30 minutes. Or Wangbuliuxingzi (Semen Vaccariae) is used for ear pressure on both ears in alternation. The patients are advised to press themselves 3 - 4 times a day and 2 - 3 minutes each time.

Nature therapy- Acupuncture for Simple Obesity
[Introduction]
Obesity refers to accumulation of fat in the body due to changes of the biochemical and physiological functions. Clinically body weight increase by 20% more than the standard level is regarded as obesity, usually accompanied by abnormal changes of appetite and sleep, sweating, dry mouth and disorder of stool. TCM believes that obesity is mainly due to disorder of the spleen and stomach as well as dyfunction of defensive qi. The pathological changes are blood sthenia and qi asthenia, exuberance of yin and deficiency of yang as well as disorder of qi and blood. Insufficiency of primordial qi in the triple energizer affects metabolism of water and transformation of qi, consequently leading to obesity.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Heat in the stomach and intestines
Hyperorexia, polyphagia, dry mouth and preference for drinking water, aversion to heat and profuse sweating, irritability and susceptibility to rage, constipation, yellow and scanty urine, red tongue with yellow and greasy fur, slippery and powerful pulse or slippery and rapid pulse.
2. Asthenia of spleen and stomach qi
Pale complexion and lips, poor appetite, abdominal distension after meal, spiritual lassitude and fatigue, palpitation and shortness of breath, somnolence and no desire to talk, loose stool or scanty urine and dropsy, light-colored tongue with tooth prints on the margins, thin and white tongue fur, thin, slow and weak pulse or deep and slow pulse.
3. Insufficiency of renal primordial qi
Bright-white complexion, preference for quietness and aversion to activity, normal appetite or reduced appetite, shortness of breath and asthma, sweating in movement, dizziness and aching loins, or afternoon fever, thirst without much drinking, or aversion to cold and edema of limbs, often accompanied by irregular menstruation in women and impotence in men, light-colored tongue with tender texture and tooth prints on the margins, scanty tongue fur, deep, thin and weak pulse.
