Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Gastroptosis

[Introduction]
Gastroptosis refers to the condition that the lesser curvature notch of the stomach is lower than the iliac crest level in standing position due to looseness of the ligament supporting the stomach and decline of the gastrotonia. The clinical manifestations are dragging distension in the abdomen and stomachache which are immediately alleviated when the patient lies flat. This problem is usually seen among women with emaciation, narrow thorax and looseness of abdominal muscles. This disease is usually caused by improper diet, overstrain and lack of caring after illness that lead to hypofunction of the spleen and stomach as well as sinking of gastrosplenic qi. Gastroptosis is usually complicated by retention of dampness and phlegm due to abnormal activities of the spleen and stomach in transformation and transportation, leading to the syndrome of mixture of asthenia and sthenia as well as the syndrome of root asthenia and branch sthenia

[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Disharmony between liver and stomach
Distending pain in the epigastrium involving the ribsides, aggravation after meal, frequent belching, vomiting of acid fluid, dysphoria and susceptibility to rage, red tongue with thin and yellow fur, taut and rapid pulse.

2. Spleen asthenia and qi sinking
Fullness and mass in the epigastrium and abdomen, dragging and distending sensation in the abdomen, aggravation after meal, alleviation in flat supination, or regurgitation of clear fluid, phlegm and saliva, dizziness and lassitude, loose stool, light-colored tongue with white fur, soft and slow pulse.

3. Asthenia of both qi and yin
Dragging and distending sensation in the epigastrium and abdomen, aggravation after meal, bitter taste and dryness in the mouth, or dry vomiting and hiccup, hunger without appetite, red tongue with scanty fur and thin and rapid pulse.

Acute corrosive gastritis is caused by intake of corrosive agents and needs emergent treatment. Acute infective gastritis and suppurative gastritis are caused by general infection. The following discussion focuses on acute simple gastritis marked by pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen, reduced appetite or distension and belching as well as nausea and vomiting. This disease pertains to epigastralgia, vomiting and diarrhea in TCM. Acute gastritis is usually caused by exogenous pathogenic factors and improper diet that lead to dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, failure of gastric qi to descend and upward adverse flow of turbid qi.

[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Cold-dampness attacking the middle energizer
Sudden onset of stomachache, severe pain, aversion to cold and preference for warmth, alleviation with warmth, nausea and vomiting, or
diarrhea with thin fluid, or even watery diarrhea, or accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, light-colored tongue with white fur as well as taut and tense pulse.

Nature therapy-Acupuncture for Hypertension

Hypertension is a series of clinical symptoms marked by increase of blood pressure in the arteries of body circulation. According to the criteria suggested by WHO in 1996, adults with systolic pressure 140 mmHg (18.72kPa) and/or diastolic pressure 90 mmHg (12.3 kPa)can be diagnosed with hypertension (result of three times of test done not continually in one day). Hypertension should be differentiated from secondary hypertension (symptomatic hypertension). This disease is similar to dizziness and headache in TCM. It is usually caused by emotional factors, constitutional defects, diet and overstrain that lead to imbalance of yin and yang in the liver, spleen and kidney, eventually resulting in hyperactivity of liver fire, or phlegm disturbing the upper, or frequent asthenia of kidney yin and failing of yin to control yang. It may be caused by consumption of yin involving yang and asthenia of both yin and yang in prolonged disease.

Acupuncture for Acute and chronic bronchitis

Acute and chronic bronchitis refers to inflammation of trachea and bronchia due to various factors. The main clinical symptoms are cough, expectoration and asthma. Acute and chronic bronchitis pertains to the conceptions of cough, cough and dyspnea as well as phlegm and fluid-retention in TCM. The cause of this disease is either exogenous or endogenous. Exogenous cause refers to attack by wind, cold, heat and dryness that lead to non-conveyance of pulmonary qi, failure of body fluids to distribute and obstruction of the trachea by sputum. Endogenous cause refers to dysfunction of the lung, spleen and kid-ney. Lung asthenia results in failure of pulmonary qi to convey and descend; dysfunction of the spleen leads to accumulation of dampness into phlegm which attacks the lung; kidney asthenia brings about dysfunction of qi and upward adverse flow of qi; or invasion of liver fire into the lung leads to consumption of body fluid by lung heat. Acute bronchitis is usually of sthenia syndrome, while chronic bronchitis is usually of asthenia syndrome or syndrome with asthenia in root and sthenia in branch.

[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Wind-cold encumbering lung
Cough with white sputum, nasal obstruction and running nose, aversion to cold and fever, headache and general aching, light-colored tongue with thin and white fur, floating and tense pulse.

2. Wind-heat attacking lung
Cough with yellow sputum, difficulty in expectoration due to thick sputum, dry mouth and sore throat, fever and headache, tongue with red tip and margins, thin and yellow tongue fur, floating and rapid pulse.

3. Dry-heat impairing lung
Dry cough without sputum, or scanty and sticky sputum, or even blood in sputum, unsmooth expectoration, dry nose and throat, headache and fever, red tongue with scanty fluid, thin and yellow tongue fur, thin and rapid pulse.

4. Retention of phlegm and dampness in lung
Cough with profuse sputum, white and sticky sputum easy to expectorate, heavy cough, fullness and oppression in chest or dyspnea and shortness of breath, anorexia and abdominal distension, light-colored tongue with white and greasy tongue fur, soft and slippery pulse.

5. Liver fire scorching lung
Paroxysmal cough involving the rib-side, scanty and sticky sputum difficult to expectorate, or even blood in sputum, dry and itching throat, red eyes and bitter taste in the mouth, constipation and brown urine, tongue with red tip and margins, thin and yellow tongue fur, taut and rapid pulse.

6. Asthenia of lung and kidney yin
Dry cough without sputum or with scanty sputum, sticky or bloody sputum, dry mouth and throat, feverish sensation in the palms, soles and chest, night sweating and tidal fever, emaciation, red tongue with scanty fur, thin and rapid pulse.

Acupuncture for Mumps

Mumps refers to acute infectious disease of respiratory tract due to mumps virus. The clinical symptoms are non-suppurative swelling of the parotid gland, pain, fever, restricted activity in chewing and involve-ment of various glands or viscera. Usually the prognosis is favourable. A few cases tend to develop complications like orchitis, encephalitis, meningitis, pancreatitis and ovari-tis. This disease usually occurs in winter and spring a-mong children. It is often caused by exogenous wind and warmth that stagnate shaoyang and yangming meridians. Severe attack by pathogenic factors may involve the liver meridian and lead to swelling and pain of testis. Invasion of exuberant pathogenic toxin into the pericardium may generate liver wind by extreme heat and result in deterio-rated syndrome.

[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Stagnation of wind-heat
Parotid swelling and pain, difficulty in chewing, ac-companied by aversion to cold, fever, headache, general aching sensation, thin and yellow tongue fur, and floating and rapid pulse.

2. Exuberance of pathogenic toxin
Parotic swelling and unpressable pain, difficulty in chewing, sore throat, lingering high fever, restless thirst with desire to drink, headache, red tongue with yellow fur, slippery and rapid pulse. Stagnation of heat in the liv-er meridian may lead to swelling and pain of testis, drag-ging pain in the lower abdomen, or even chills and high fever. Inner sinking of virulence may result in sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, or even coma, convulsion, red tongue with yellow fur, or deep-red tongue with scanty fur, large and rapid or thin and rapid pulse.

[Treatment]
Body acupuncture
Prescription: Jiache (ST 6), Yifeng (TE 17), Waiguan (TE 15) and Hegu (LI 4).

Performance: Reducing needling technique is used. Jiache (ST 6 ) is needled horizontally for 0.8- 1 cun. Yifeng (TE 17) is needled obliquely downward for 0.8-1 cun. The needles are retained for 30 minutes. For the treatment of patients with high fever, the retention of needles may be prolonged. The needles are manipulated once every 5 - 10 minutes and the treatment is given once or twice a day.
